January, 2020 – The Golden Jubilee year of Don Bosco High School and Junior College, Borivali, began on a very joyous note, in which the talented students of the institution, took everyone on an enchanting, Musical ‘magic carpet ride’, through their mesmerizing production, of the Children’s Broadway version of ‘Alladin’. The Management and Staff, had an array of Inter-School activities, planned for the entire year, and they did manage to begin with a couple of those; till the pandemic and the lockdown brought everything to an abrupt halt.

Instead of letting this unforeseen turn of events that took the world by storm, dampen their spirits, the Staff of the institution, guided by the vision and leadership of their Principal, Fr. Flovi D’Souza; kept challenging themselves all through the academic year that began in June 2020, by not only adapting to online teaching, but also soldiering on and constantly innovating. Like educators everywhere, they updated themselves at the speed of lightening; and delved into the world of computer technology, like they had never done before.

The result, was a long series of Intra-School Competitions, covering all kinds of Literary, Artistic and Performing Arts, held across all the sections of the school and Junior College, to make up for what had been planned initially. This ensured that the all-round development of the students, which is a hallmark of every Don Bosco institution, carried on, in a unique and different way, together with their academics. These competitions, not only gave the students ample opportunities to showcase their talents using a virtual medium, but it also re-energised them, to believe that ‘Anything is Possible’, if only you have the optimistic outlook and the determination to keep going, despite all odds.

January 2021 – Together with a wide spectrum of online competitions, to celebrate the Feast of St. John Bosco and Republic Day, the various sections of the school also conducted virtual Class Assemblies on the Father and Founder of the institution. A wonderful online ‘Quiz Competition’ was also conducted for all the students, on the Life of Don Bosco, which the students participated in, very enthusiastically; and were awarded E-certificates for their hard-work. The icing on this very festive cake however, was a virtual ANNUAL DAY, that was showcased on YouTube on the 30th of January’2021, celebrating the ‘SAINT OF THE YOUNG’, who has been ‘A RAY OF SUNSHINE AND HOPE FOR 50 GOLDEN YEARS’ in the Institution; and who has been transforming young lives, ever since 1859, through the Salesian Congregation.

Don Bosco was born more than 200 years ago; but he left a legacy, that lives on even today, all over the world. He was a colourful rainbow, in the lives of so many young lads, who lived on the streets of Turin in Italy, and had lost all hope. With kindness and love and a warm ‘word in their ears’, he reached out to them. Through song, dance, a sweet presentation on the ‘Tips of Don Bosco’, a wonderfully enacted skit entitled ‘Don Bosco in our hearts forever’, a presentation on the Rector Major’s Strenna, entitled ‘Moved by Hope’ and a wonderfully compiled ‘School Report’, the wonder of this great Saint was showcased, in an ‘Annual Day’ that was put together lovingly and painstakingly, by the Staff and students of all the sections of the institution. A lot of support was provided by the parents of the participants as well, given the fact that most of the recordings had to be done, by the students at home.

The end result, was the fruit of a truly fabulous and commendable effort by everyone who played a part in making this virtual event a success; with a special mention of the teachers in the Computer Department of the school and college. Together, a beautiful message, of being a colourful rainbow of ‘HOPE’ in the world, like Don Bosco, was communicated and shared with everyone. The Rector, Fr. Solomon Rapol, also shared a message with all those watching, that even in trying times, “we must have a sense of solidarity with the less fortunate and share what God has blessed us with; and above all ‘Pray’.”

Despite the fact that the grandeur and festive atmosphere, of having 900 to a 1000 students on stage, with a large LED screen as they performed with colourful costumes, was missing this year, the Management, Staff and Students of Don Bosco High School and Junior College, Borivali, still made it a ‘Celebration’ to remember. A mini-celebration on a virtual platform, with comparatively very few participants; but nevertheless, one that beautifully reminded everyone, to be ‘Thankful and Grateful’ for all the blessings we have received. The Principal, Fr. Flovi D’Souza also expressed his gratitude to all those who made the event possible and especially stated, “We are grateful to our Superiors, who have graciously invited us to extend our Jubilee Celebrations by another year”. The DB Family in Borivali looks forward to the year ahead, with eager anticipation and ‘Hope’.

‘Don Bosco dreamed of rainbows lighting up the sky and of children finding wings to fly’. The online ANNUAL DAY concluded with a virtual Grand Finale, in which this beautiful thought was communicated, ‘Dearest Don Bosco, for 50 Golden years, and the next 50 to come, let us LIVE YOUR DREAM for you.’
